Summer Program Outline

CMHA PRESEASON PROGRAM  INFORMATION

CMHA Summer Hockey Development is about preparing the player for the upcoming season. So what is preparing? We believe in creating a "growth mindset". Growth mindset is the gap between what research says and what we actually do for skill development, in a nutshell, it’s helping the player believe in their capacity to grow. It sounds simple but it is one of the biggest hurdles that we have to jump in order to become a great learner and to believe that we can actually do that. It’s such a powerful concept that skills are built, not born, and they can be yours if you earn them. It’s impossible to learn something if deep down you don’t think that you can.

The focus of our programs during these weeks leading up to tryouts is about developing the person AND the athlete. We demand that the player be held to a standard of excellence, no matter what level they play. Moreover, seeking challenge, battling for personal excellence and striving to be a better person each day, living, playing with a purpose and embedded in CMHA's core development values. Each player will have the opportunity to experience satisfaction in becoming better at the game, enjoying the journey, and being part of something bigger than themselves, "TEAM".

Below is our pre-season schedule. Should you have any questions please contact programs@coqmha.org

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL PROGRAM OPERATIONS WILL BE DETERMINED BY REGISTRATION NUMBERS SO IF THERE IS A PROGRAM  YOU LIKE, REGISTER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

CLASSROOM – POIRIER MPR#3 ROOM

ON ICE - RINK 3, POIRIER

Hockey is based around creating plays to score goals, however, it is just as important to disrupt plays to prevent goals. The defensemen and forwards are expected to check, contain, box out, pin, block shots, and work as an organized team to prevent the opponent from scoring. Developing our players to check the right way will give us the tools we need to make our teams more successful.

Setting up and scoring goals is one half of the game, while preventing the opponent from scoring is the other half.  We would say that our team’s ability to play without the puck determines fifty percent of our chance of success. All players need the right checking skills and, as any skill, they can be learned, trained and developed. Checking is not an isolated set of skills, they are intertwined with all other hockey skills such as skating, stick-handling, passing and shooting. While skating skills form the foundation for all other hockey skills, it is important to develop all core skills simultaneously.  In addition to physical skills, developing awareness on the ice so you know where opponents and teammates are on the ice is equally important.

The three class room sessions is an introduction to Body Contact/Checking Techniques in addition to teaching the player the safety aspects of the surrounding environment.  Furthermore, it will provide the player a better and more confident transition onto the ice sessions.
