Welcome to the 2010/2011 Hockey Season
I would like to welcome all existing and new officials to the upcoming season.
To introduce myself, I am Dean Nelson and have taken over the position of Referee in Chief for the upcoming season. I have 29 years of hockey officiating up to Jr.A as well as have officiated Jr. levels of Lacrosse and Football in the past. In addition, I have coached within the Coquitlam Minor Hockey Association and still play the game of hockey. With that, I bring a varied amount of experience to this positon and am hoping I can pass along some of my knowledge and experience to the officials within the association.
My primary role this season is to bring pride to the officials of CMHA and with that encourage all officials to work to the best level that they can, but most of all I want all officials to enjoy the experience, improve their game and have fun while doing so.
CLINICS
All new and returning officials are encouraged to attend the clinic date that will be posted shortly. Please keep checking this page as I will be posting a confirmation once I get the information from BCAHA.
As in the past, 100% attendance is mandatory in order to be carded. You will not be excused to attend Rep Tryouts or any other evaluation. Non compliance with the attendance requirement will result in the official not being carded for the upcoming season.
There are other clinics throughout the lower mainland should you be unable to attend the scheduled clinic in Coquitlam.
To register for any clinic, including the CMHA one, you must go through the BCAHA website.
NEW OFFICIALS
If you are 12 years of age by the end of December 31, 2010 (1998 yr), then you are eligible to become an official. Should you be interested, please send me an email @ ref@coquitlamminorhockey.org with your name, age and contact information. You will be required to attend a carding clinic and write an exam.
RETURNING OFFICIALS
Please indicate your intention to continue officiating this upcoming season. Send an email to ref@coquitlamminorhockey.org with any changes to your contact information and include your current carding level and highest level of hockey work in the past season.
ALL RETURNING LEVEL 1 AND 2 OFFICIALS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND ONE OF THE SUPER SATURDAY CLINICS BEING HELD IN THE LOWER MAINLAND. THERE WILL BE NO CLINIC IN COQUITLAM OTHER THAN ONE FOR 1ST YEAR OFFICIALS. Information for dates of these clinics are to be found on the BCAHA website.
EQUIPMENT
The following items are mandatory for on ice officials.
1. A CSA certified black helmet and CSA certified visor. No full cages or shields.
2. Hockey skates. Goalie nor figure skates are permitted.
3. Hockey Officials jersey.
4. Whistle - Acme Thunder or Fox 40 will work.
5. Black pants . No jeans will be accepted.
6. A bag to carry your equipment.

8. Protective cup or jill.
The following equipment is recommended and if you are working a higher level of hockey above PeeWee, it is mandatory.
1. Shin pads.

3. String to repair nets. Old skate laces cut up work well.
4. Protective girdle and pants.
5. Stick guage and measuring tape.
6. Note pad.
7. Referees jersey. This one will have the red arm bands already attached but slip on Red Arm bands work well especially if you are just starting to referee games.
ASSIGNORS
I have already approached one of the past years assignors to enquire if they will continue for the upcoming season. They have indicated that they will and those who were past assignors and wish to continue in the upcoming season, please contact me via email at your convenience. Regardless of that, I will be contacting the past assignors shortly to ascertain if they wish to continue for the upcoming season. If anyone is interested, please send me an email expressing the same.
COACHES
It is my intention to hold two meetings prior to the start of the season with the coaches withing the CMHA to present the Rule Emphasis for the upcoming season. In addition I will be discussing the role of the on ice officials, what is expected of them and in turn what I expect from the coaches of CMHA.
This season, there will be an online evaluation form for coaches to fill out after each game if so desired. The purpose of this form will be for constructive critisim of the on ice officials and also for any positive feed back from coaches with respect to the referees. I will not be accepting any evaluations which are used to berate or call down officials. The purpose of this is to identify those officials which are doing a good job and need to be recognized for that and to identify potential issues with officials so that they may be evaluated or given further instruction if required. I will be attending as many games as possible to observe the officials as well as having mentors and evaluators at as many games as we can, but we may not be everywhere and all games. The idea of this form is to help assist me with this process.
Lastly. At anytime anyone has questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me by email at anytime.
Good luck to all Officials the upcoming season.
Dean Nelson
