BC Hockey Skills Summit

BC Hockey in conjunction with Hockey Canada is proud to present the first ever Provincial Skill Summit for Coaches. This isn’t your average Coaching Clinic, we are teaching skills. Specifically, we are teaching our delegates how to teach specific skills to their team. This has been identified as “what coach’s want” and a component that regular clinics don’t emphasize. This seminar, which is based on the material in the National Coach Mentorship Program (NCMP) and created by Hockey Canada, will train coaches from around the province in the specific skills of:
  • Creating offense/Creating defense
  • Puck control/Skating
  • Creative thinking/Small Area Games
  • Special Teams
Coaches are placed in groups and instructed on the above skills by a BC Hockey trained Course Conductor, Hockey Canada representatives and special guest(s). Each group will attend on ice sessions, classroom sessions and observation sessions.  Delegates who attend this seminar will receive Coaching Credits which will be listed on their permanent Coaching record on the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR).

Coach Application - Season 2010-2011
The process for recruiting and selection coaches for the 2010-2011 Hockey Season is well under way. The new season brings new opportunities to recruit, develop and support our CMHA Coaches at all levels. This will result in our players learning and developing their skills, enjoying the game, and helping to build good character in young people.
Last Wednesday at the CMHA Executive meeting, we confirmed members of the CMHA Coach Selection Committee for all age divisions. The committees will perform interviews and determine coaches for the new hockey season. The coach selection process will be fair, consistent and compliant with CMHA policies and guidelines (posted on website).
I have received many emails from prospective coaches expressing interest and I have received some applications from candidates. As members of CMHA, you can all help in the recruiting process by considering if you or someone you know has the skills and interest to take a leadership role in skill development and character building of our players.
Please send your completed CMHA Coach Application to coach@coquitlamminorhockey.org
Please download the application here.
I will be receiving applications for coaching positions until Friday, May 28th.
Thanks in advance for making a positive impact on Coquitlam Minor Hockey.
David Coons
CMHA Coaching Coordinator

Helmet Requirement for Coaches
BC Hockey announced today that steps will be taken to increase the level of safety for coaches taking part in on-ice activities.
At meetings held this past weekend in Richmond, the BC Hockey Executive Committee passed a motion which will effectively require all coaches to wear a helmet during team practices. A directive was issued today to all member minor hockey associations in BC and the Yukon notifying them of the requirement, which will take effect on December 1, 2008.
“The decision is viewed as a necessary step in the evolution of safety requirements for hockey participants, and has been in development over the past couple of years” noted BC Hockey Risk Manager Randy Henderson. “We had put our plans on hold in anticipation of a national directive on the subject, but when we received word last week from the Hockey Canada Safety and Risk Management Committee that the release of a national policy was not imminent our Board decided it was time to take action here in BC.”
The decision sets out that failure to wear a helmet by a coach at practice will result in the pulling of BC Hockey’s sanction of the practice. Unsanctioned activities are not covered by the association’s insurance policy. The new policy will mean that all coaches who participant on-ice with their players will be required to wear a CSA approved helmet. “This policy is being introduced with the coach’s safety in mind” added Henderson.
